| Directions : |
| These instructions are intended for people who come to Ohel Shlomo for the first time and are not familiar with Kobe. This route takes about 20-25 minutes. It is not the shortest one, but it is the simplest to describe. God willing, you will visit us more than once and you will discover by yourself other alternatives and shortcuts to this one. Please note that there are a number of train stations in Kobe; you have to get off at Sannomiya (unless you come by Shinkansen to Shin-Kobe; see instruction set no. 4). |
| If possible, print out the picture on this page and it will help you locate the synagogue for the first time. |
1. From Hankyu line: Get off at Sannomiya station, exit on the North side. You will find yourself on a narrow, busy street. West is on your left; traffic is one-way eastbound.Follow the street west. Cross the first large intersection (Ikuta Road), and turn right (north) at the next large intersection (Tor Rd -"Toa Road" in Japanese spelling). Follow Tor Rd. heading North towards the mountain until it becomes a narrower street which turns right (At this point you are in front of Kobe Club). Follow this narrow street to your right-- it makes one turn left and shortly after, another one right. Walk for another 30m (or yards if you prefer!) and the synagogue is on your left. |
2. From JR line: Get off at Sannomiya station and exit at the West Exit, turning right.10m later you are at the Hankyu line Sannomiya east exit. Go downstairs, turn left, exit on the North side, turn left onto the busy narrow street, and continue as in #1 above. |
3. From Hanshin line: Get off at Sannomiya station (underground), follow signs to Hankyu Station and see the instructions with #1 above. |
4. Arriving by Shinkansen at Shin-Kobe. Note: The Shinkansen station is quite convenient to the synagogue on foot, but far by taxi. The station is located at higher elevation that the synagogue, and therefore when you get out of the Shin Kobe station you first go downhill a bitExit the Shinkansen station and find your way to the Oriental Hotel. Exit the hotel building on its south side and look for the entrance to the cable car (or 'ropeway'). You are now on the same street as the synagogue. It is the street going uphill, one-way traffic facing you (this is why it is far by taxi; from the synagogue back to Shin-Kobe is a direct four or five minutes).Keep going west on this street for about 15 minutes. The white, two-story synagogue will appear on your right. |
5. If you decide to go by taxi, tell the driver (pausing to make sure you are understood): "Kitano-cho yon-chome, yudaiya kyo(o)kai (elongate the 'o') e itte kudasai." If the driver looks puzzled, add: "To-a Ro-do wo zutto nobotte" (go all the way up Tor Road). It helps to have directions written, preferably in Japanese but even in Roman alphabet letters as you are reading here.Depending on traffic, this trip from Sannomiya may cost between Y660 and Y800. |
